Peter Paul Rubens (1577
- 1640). Flemish painter, draughtsman and diplomat. He was the most versatile and influential Baroque artist of northern Europe in the 17th century.
He is well-known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.
Equestrian Portrait of the Duke of Lerma
Made in 1603, during Rubens' first visit to Spain, this work
shows the power and vigor of portraits from his first
period, and his capacity to capture the model's personality.
Here he reflects the haughtiness and pride of the Duke's
powerful political situation.
