Hurricane Katrina made landfall near New
Orleans, Louisiana, on August 29, 2005. The hurricane's storm surge breached
the levees that protected New Orleans from Lake Pontchartrain, flooding most
of the city. This and other major damage to the coastal regions of
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama made Katrina the most destructive and
costliest tropical cyclone ever to hit the United States.
Hurricane Rita, following close upon the devastating Hurricane
Katrina that washed out New Orleans, made landfall early on September 24,
2005.
Hurricane Wilma hit southwest Florida at
dawn as a Category 3 storm, packing winds of 125 mph that took off roofs,
damaged homes, downed power lines and brought flooding as far south as Key
West.
Brainstorm ideas to help the hurricane affected
regions and people.
