Raul Garcia Zarate
Raul Garcia Zarate (1932, Ayacucho, Peru), is the
best known classical and popular guitar player of Peru.
The guitar in Andean music is used as an ensemble instrument in the string
bands of the Peruvian department of Ancash, as a solo instrument in the
department of Ayacucho, and as an accompanying instrument for singing
throughout the Andes. It is in the state of Ayacucho, however, with the
performance style of Dr. Raúl García Zárate, that the Andean guitar has
reached its highest development.

Huayno is a genre of popular Andean Music and dance from Peru. It is very common in Peru. It originated in colonial Peru as a combination of traditional rural folk music and popular urban dance music. High-pitched vocals are accompanied by a variety of instruments, including quena (flute), harp, siku (panpipe), accordion, saxophone, charango, lute, violin, guitar, and mandolin. Some elements of huayno originate in the music of the pre-Columbian Andes.
