The inspiring words of Max Ehrmann's prose poem "Desiderata" ring as true today as when they were first written in 1927. Millions of readers have since been moved by Ehrmann's sage words, which begin famously with "Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence."

Max Ehrmann (1872 - 1945) was born in Terre Haute, Indiana and graduated from De Pauw University, going on to do postgraduate studies in law and philosophy at Harvard University. After practicing law for several years he joined the family business, but retired ten years later to concentrate on writing. It was only in the late '60s when Desiderata became a cult poem of the new generation, that his work began to be better known.
